An Art-Lover’s Paradise
Northbrook, Illinois
In a phased renovation, the Van Zelst team completely refreshed this modern estate’s breathtaking gardens and entertaining areas, ultimately earning a silver Illinois Award for Landscape Design in 2009.
One of the larger projects was the removal of an outdoor pool. The home already had an indoor pool, so the owners wanted to add more green space and enhance access to their often-used tennis courts. In addition, they wanted to exhibit a one-of-a-kind sculpture, part of an eclectic art collection showcased throughout the home. The complete landscape plan—including views, planting bed lines and pathways—converge on this point.
In addition, multiple seating areas invite groups to gather throughout the environment. More formal seating is available adjacent to the home, while a casual patio of creeping thyme and flagstone creates a more casual setting.
Throughout, a subdued color palette that focuses on a variety of greens and reds, reflects the owners’ minimal aesthetic.
